For the Love of Kids is a memoir of Rosemary's life as a mother and foster mother. The book talks about the highs and lows, joys and heartaches, achievements and disappointments that she has been through during her years of child-rearing. I am sure a lot of parents will be able to relate to some of the stories and laugh along with her at some of them.

Rosemary also talks about the frustrations with the foster care system and the effect this system has on, not only the foster children, but the foster parents and their natural children. A number of the children that she fostered had disabilities, including one very special boy Sam who has Down Syndrome, but these were not a handicap only a challenge to be overcome.

My inspiration, for telling the stories of the kids I have loved and will always love, was a little man called Sam. Sam was a major part of our lives for the first two and a half years of his life; but I’m sure will impact on all of us for the rest of our lives. He is never far from my thoughts and I get a warm loving feeling when I think of him and I hope that he receives my loving thoughts. I treasure the moments we are able to spend with him and I thank his parents for sharing him with us.

I guess I should explain that I was a foster mum and Sam was one of my foster children. The stories I will tell in this book are mainly about the children in my life and the joy these children have given so many people. Too often we hear the clichés about children being our future etc., rolling off the tongues of those who want to be seen (or rather heard) as saying something profound for their own purpose. However we see and hear too little of the real understanding of this cliché. Our children are so very special and should be loved and cared for in a very special way. Then their future and ours would be assured.

I also felt that I should write this book for my kids, when Amanda, my eldest daughter, asked me one day about the babies I had lost. I really do believe that we should chronicle our lives for our children; one never knows when details are important to them.

You will probably guess (very quickly) how passionately I feel about children and how frustrated and disgusted I am with the systems set up supposedly to protect the children, fail. But systems being systems, the main element they protect, is themselves. The children have to just cope as best they can; but the authorities do very well because of them, thank you very much!!

Never fear though, I will not be making myself out to be a Mother Theresa type... oh, no; I could never get away with that. I recently said I like to see myself as a cross between Mother Theresa, Princess Di, Margaret Thatcher, Germaine Greer, and to throw in a bit of the testosterone, maybe Superman. (And a few others whom I will not name for fear of incriminating myself!)
